چکیده

A confidence interval is an interval (i.e., a range of values) estimate of a parameter of a population (e.g., a mean) calculated from a sample drawn from the population. A confidence interval has an associated confidence level, which is frequency with which a calculated confidence interval is expected to contain the population parameter. Confidence intervals are of interest in modeling and simulation because they are often used in model validation. Typically, a set of executions of the model to be validated, which is a sample from the population of all possible executions of the model, are run and from their results a confidence interval is calculated as an estimate of the population parameter (e.g., mean model output value) that would result if all possible model executions had been run. Then, if the corresponding known or observed value for the simuland is within the confidence interval calculated from the model executions, or within some acceptable tolerance of the confidence interval’s endpoints, the model is considered to be valid for the parameter in question. This paper is an introductory tutorial and survey on confidence intervals in model validation. Confidence intervals are introduced in a statistical context, their interpretation and use in model validation is explained, and examples of the application of confidence intervals in validation are presented.

Bayes Interval Estimation on the Parameters of the Weibull Distribution for Complete and Censored Tests

A method for constructing confidence intervals on parameters of a continuous probability distribution is developed in this paper. The objective is to present a model for an uncertainty represented by parameters of a probability density function.  As an application, confidence intervals for the two parameters of the Weibull distribution along with their joint confidence interval are derived. The...

Advanced Topics in Calculating and Using Confidence Intervals for Model Validation

A confidence interval is an interval estimate of a parameter of a population, such as a mean, calculated from a sample drawn from the population. In addition to its endpoints, a confidence interval has an associated confidence level, which is a statistically justified degree of confidence that the interval actually contains the population parameter. Confidence intervals are often used in model ...

Area specific confidence intervals for a small area mean under the Fay-Herriot model

‎Small area estimates have received much attention from both private and public sectors due to the growing demand for effective planning of health services‎, ‎apportioning of government funds and policy and decision making‎. ‎Surveys are generally designed to give representative estimates at national or district level‎, ‎but estimates of variables of interest are oft...

Calculating confidence intervals for prediction error in microarray classification using resampling.

Cross-validation based point estimates of prediction accuracy are frequently reported in microarray class prediction problems. However these point estimates can be highly variable, particularly for small sample numbers, and it would be useful to provide confidence intervals of prediction accuracy. We performed an extensive study of existing confidence interval methods and compared their perform...

Outer and Inner Confidence Intervals Based on Extreme Order Statistics in a Proportional Hazard Model

Let Mi and Mi be the maximum and minimum of the ith sample from k independent sample with different sample sizes, respectively. Suppose that the survival distribution function of the ith sample is F ̄i = F ̄αi, where αi is known and positive constant. It is shown that how various exact non-parametric inferential proce- ′ dures can be developed on the basis of Mi’s and Mi ’s for distribution ...
